El Tablero: The Transfer Board That Won't Stop Moving

The transfer board at the Benz — the actual whiteboard where Henderson and his staff pin names, draw lines, cross them out — must look like a crime scene by now.

Not officially. Not yet. The framework agreement between Besiktas and Al-Hilal is at the personal-terms stage, with Nunez's agent expected in Istanbul to finalize. A season-long loan worth approximately €4 million, with Al-Hilal subsidizing a portion of his €22.45 million gross salary. Nunez reportedly views the Besiktas project "positively." He never viewed Atlanta with the same warmth.

A 15th-place MLS club competing against a Turkish club dangling a potential Mohamed Salah reunion. Istanbul or Marietta Street was never a real choice. Nunez chose a city straddling two continents over a city stuck between two conferences.

The name surfaced August 2 — the same day Latte Lath's loan was announced, as if Henderson needed the exits and the entrances to share a news cycle. Lukaku is 33. Belgium's all-time leading scorer. A nomad: Chelsea to Inter to Roma to Napoli, each chapter carrying the debris of the one before. He helped deliver the 2024-25 Scudetto under Conte. Then Allegri arrived, and Lukaku became invisible — five Serie A appearances last season. Injuries. Irrelevance. Napoli will accept approximately €10 million to let him go.

Atlanta has opened early-stage talks with his representatives. No formal bid. No agreement. "Early-stage talks" is the phrase clubs use when the interest is real and the commitment is not.

The arc is European football's oldest story. A player too expensive to play, too proud to sit, too old for the clubs that once fought over him — and perhaps, perhaps, suited to a league where his experience might still outweigh his decline. Lukaku at his peak was devastating: 24 goals for Inter in 2022-23, a Serie A title winner, a Scudetto architect. Lukaku in 2025-26 was a ghost. The question MLS always asks about aging European stars — which version arrives?

Breel Embolo occupies another corner of the board. Swiss international, 29, eight Ligue 1 goals at Stade Rennais last season, two World Cup goals still fresh in his legs. But his estimated fee — €15-17 million — draws competition from Hull City, Ipswich Town, and Serie A clubs. The attacker who fits the profile is the one everybody else wants too.

Twenty-eight days remain before the September 2 deadline. Henderson told Scarves and Spikes in early July that adding "two to three to five" players this summer "wouldn't be a surprise." The math since then: two centre-backs signed (Alonso and Diaz, both free transfers), one record signing loaned out, one primary forward target lost to Turkey, one new target in early talks. The two completed signings address the defense. The crisis lives in front of it. Nineteen goals in eighteen matches — fewest in MLS. Eleven points behind the playoff line.
