Finals MVP Is a Bet on the Winning Team With a Name Attached
Two boards at the same sportsbook are answering two different questions about this Finals, and the award board is not asking who is playing best. It is asking who will be left standing on the winning side.
A Finals MVP bet is a bet on a team with a name attached.
Twenty-nine Finals MVPs in this league's history, twenty-nine of them from the team that won. No page I could read says it has to go that way. Not a rule. A record that has not broken.
DraftKings' championship market changed its answer. Atlanta came in at +105 and I pulled the title price at -135 off ESPN's futures feed at 7:29 this morning, Golden State out to +115 from -125. Roughly nine points of implied probability, before the book's cut.
The Finals MVP board needs a date on it: a Tuesday-evening DraftKings read, published by ESPN's betting desk, with no game-day board I can find. Gabby Williams is still the MVP favorite on it at +125 after going 3-of-15 in a loss, Angel Reese second at +225 after 30 and 16 in a win.
That board is not sitting still. On the same book's October 15 list, before Game 1: Reese +425, Rhyne Howard tied at +600, Williams +120. Reese gained better than eleven times the implied probability Williams gave up, and every Golden State name but hers got longer. The board moved and the order held.
ESPN's desk wrote that Williams keeps the tag "despite her team falling behind in the series." The series is tied 1-1. Their "despite" is the right word aimed at the wrong thing.
The title price answers who wins. The award price answers who did it if Golden State wins, and their path runs through Williams. A twenty-percent shooting night costs her a game. It does not cost her the job.
Reese can go for 30 again tonight and stay exactly where she is. Three more Atlanta wins moves her, not another stat line.
The Tilt
Angel Reese cannot play her way to the top of that board -- only Atlanta can win her there.

Nobody in Atlanta plays today, and it is the last day this week on which nothing is settled. Friday decides a Cup group game, Saturday a season, and Sunday a home game four thousand miles from home.

Almost everything on Atlanta's board this morning is an estimate - a hip, an ankle, a hamstring, a table position. The exception is a Gold Glove won by a man who filed for free agency three days before it was announced.

There is no NBA game anywhere tonight. Then Atlanta's week arrives all at once — Washington twice inside three days, two fixtures on Saturday, Madrid on Sunday.
