The Hawks own a 2-1 series lead, the draft board handed Cunningham every defensive tackle he wanted at 48, and Tata Martino told the press his 2018 trophy is the only thing keeping him employed. Four teams, four emotional temperatures, one Friday morning.
The Hawks own a 2-1 series lead, the draft board handed Cunningham every defensive tackle he wanted at 48, and Tata Martino told the press his 2018 trophy is the only thing keeping him employed. Four teams, four emotional temperatures, one Friday morning.
Hawks
McCollum's fadeaway from the left baseline with 12.5 seconds left gave the Hawks a 2-1 series lead. But the Game 3 number that matters most is not McCollum's. It is Mikal Bridges's. Zero points. 0-for-3 from the field. Minus-26 in 20 minutes. Benched in crunch time — and the Knicks got better without him on the floor. When a $25-million trade acquisition makes the team worse by being present, the problem is not one bad night. It is structural.
The Hawks' depth made the opposite argument. Jalen Johnson put up 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists — the first player in franchise playoff history to reach those numbers. Jonathan Kuminga scored 10 first-quarter points off the bench. Dyson Daniels grabbed 13 rebounds from the guard spot. The roster that was supposed to be Atlanta's ceiling is becoming New York's problem.
Game 4 is Saturday at 6 PM at State Farm Arena. NBC. A win puts the Hawks up 3-1 — and teams that take a 3-1 lead win the series roughly 95 percent of the time. Okongwu's right knee remains the variable with Landale out. Simone has the full read on what the morning after Game 3 feels like in a city that has not believed like this in three years. Dex is at 91 percent and has the receipts.
Falcons
Only two defensive tackles were taken in the entire first round. Neither was Miller, Hunter, nor McDonald. Every interior defender the Falcons wanted at 48 is still on the board. The positional cliff Cunningham warned about did not arrive in Round 1. Tonight it might.
The NFC South did not wait. Saints took the consensus best receiver — Jordyn Tyson at 8. Buccaneers landed Rueben Bain at 15, one of two PFF Elite grades in the round. Panthers took an offensive tackle at 19 and still have eight picks remaining. Atlanta is the only divisional team without a first-round selection. Cunningham spent Thursday night doing a dry run at pick 13 — the one that used to be theirs. The Rams used it on a quarterback.
Pick 48 tonight at 7 PM. The answers are on the board. Miles has the full analytical breakdown of what the board gave Cunningham and what he should do with it. Dex is 70 percent sure the Falcons are already behind and wants to be proven wrong.
Braves
Eighteen and eight. Best record in the NL. Plus-62 run differential. An 8-0-1 series record — they have not lost a completed series all season. The Phillies arrive tonight at 8-17 with nine straight losses. This is not a rivalry game. It is a team hosting visitors.
The honest number: the Braves' 2.93 ERA leads baseball, but the FIP sits at 4.05. That gap — built on a .267 opponents' BABIP, 22 points below league average — means the pitching staff has been converting contact into outs at a rate that narrows over time. The question is not whether the Braves are good. The question is which version of good they are.
Michael Harris II is expected to play through left quad tightness. He was hitting .447 over his last eleven games when the quad whispered. Tonight: Holmes vs. Painter on Apple TV at 7:15 — a rematch from five days ago when Holmes won 4-2 in Philadelphia. Ellis has the full twenty-six-game view of what this April actually proves.
United
"If I didn't have the past that I did with Atlanta United, probably today I would be fired."
Martino said it himself. The record is 1-7-1. Four points. Worst start in franchise history. Over the last 27 MLS regular-season matches across two coaches, this club is 2-16-9. The 2018 trophy is the shield — it deflects the consequences any other coach at this record would face. Martino knows it. Now everyone knows he knows it.
Next: Toronto on Saturday — unbeaten in five, unbeaten at home in ten. Then six consecutive road matches while the World Cup takes Mercedes-Benz Stadium. United's 2026 road record: 0-4-0. Zero goals away from home. Tito's piece on what the confession reveals is one of the sharper things we have published this spring.
One more thing. Two coaches came to Atlanta this year to restore something. One leads a playoff series 2-1. The other told the press his trophy is the only reason he still has a job. Same city. Same pitch. Different math.
