Braves

Tyler Mahle is a Brave. The Giants starter arrived over the weekend for Anthony Molina — a hard-throwing reliever with a 7.00 career ERA and a 15.1 percent strikeout rate across 100 major-league innings. The full-season numbers say 5.13 ERA. The last seven starts, since Mahle returned from a hamstring strain in June, say 3.79. The cost: approximately $2.1 million in remaining salary and a pitcher the front office did not believe could get outs at this level.

That is the second deal in forty-eight hours, following Lane Thomas and Bailey Falter from Kansas City for Lucas Braun and Carter Holton. Thomas hits lefties — .263/.370/.430 with a 135 wRC+ — and replaces a Dubon-Yastrzemski platoon that was producing a .646 OPS. One prospect of consequence in Braun. The rest is organizational depth.

The urgency came Saturday. Reynaldo Lopez — 3.64 ERA, 5.2 scoreless innings in his last outing in Baltimore — hit the 15-day IL with knee inflammation, scratched thirty-five minutes before his scheduled start. Spencer Strider is likely done for the year. Behind Chris Sale and his 2.08 ERA, the rotation remains an open question. JR Ritchie, recalled from Gwinnett with a 4.50 ERA, filled Lopez's spot Sunday. The AJC reports Casey Mize and Hunter Greene remain targets. The front office assessment is unusually direct: they lack a clear Game 2 playoff starter.

Tua has progressed from missing Day 1 entirely to half-speed walk-throughs by Day 4, but has not taken a 7-on-7 rep. He called it a flare-up — said if it were a game week, he would likely be ready. Penix is further along in his ACL rehab than expected, doing 7-on-7 work with simulated pass-lane congestion, but full clearance is still approximately four weeks away.
