Atlanta's season is one game long now, it is on NBC, and it is at night — Tilt's coverage earlier this week called tonight an afternoon game, and that was wrong. First pitch is 8:15 p.m. ET at Truist Park, and the pieces that said otherwise are being corrected to say so.

Series tied 1-1, all three games of it at Truist Park. Atlanta took Tuesday 5-3 and Philadelphia took Wednesday 4-3 in ten innings, which is two games played to arrive at the exact place they started. The winner plays a Division Series; the loser is finished tonight. Atlanta won the East at 94-68 and seeded third, Philadelphia arrived 88-74 as the sixth seed, and none of that is worth a run this evening.

The clock moved because Major League Baseball had published a condition rather than a time: 2 p.m., unless this turned out to be the only series still standing. It turned out to be the only series still standing. Per WSB-TV, neither club knew what time it was playing until roughly 1 a.m. Dex has the stage Atlanta is standing on and how it came to be standing there.

No pitcher has been named by either club. Three separate feeds carried no probable starter for either side at 9:15 this morning, and those same fields were populated for both clubs on the morning of Game 2 — the blank is an announcement nobody has made, not a gap in the data. The Associated Press and WSB-TV both expect Grant Holmes to start or work in bulk relief for Atlanta. WSB-TV adds an opener as the alternative and puts Philadelphia between Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola; the AP names Nola. Neither club has confirmed any of it, with everything either of them has left riding on one night.

Wednesday ended on a strike-zone challenge, the first postseason game to finish that way, in the first season the challenge system has existed — which is most of what the superlative is worth. Ellis took that mechanism and the rest of the loss apart on Wednesday night. Which Atlanta relievers can actually pitch tonight. Whether resilience explains anything about a single game, tested against a column Ellis published in May.

Eleven days between kickoffs, and the standing underneath the record is the part worth knowing. Carolina, New Orleans and Atlanta are all 1-2. Carolina leads the division on a 1-0 record inside it. Atlanta is third, on 0-1 inside it and a point differential of minus 17, because winning 35-14 at Lambeau Field does not undo losing 34-3 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Week 2. The division game Atlanta has already lost is what is holding it behind two clubs with identical records.

Week 4 is Monday, 8:15 p.m. ET at Caesars Superdome, on ESPN. New Orleans is 1-2 as well, also lost at home last week, and has its own starting running back listed out. On Atlanta's side, one thing has changed since Green Bay: Samson Ebukam, questionable, dated September 29. A.J. Terrell Jr. has been on injured reserve since September 22 and that has not changed either. The feed carries no further detail about any of it, for either man or for anybody else on the list.

Basketball returns in four days — Memphis at State Farm Arena on Monday, October 5, at 7 p.m. ET, the preseason opener.

Everything else about the Hawks this morning is a report that has not moved in ten days. Four names sit on the availability list and the newest of them is Henri Veesaar's, dated September 21, which is before the Braves had played a postseason game at all. Nothing in this building has changed across the stretch that took the rest of the city from a full October to a single evening.

That is not a complaint. Ten days of an unchanged availability report is, at minimum, ten days without a new name added to it, and a team four days from being watched will take that. It is the last quiet week a basketball season gets, and it has four days left in it.

Atlanta United have scored 32 goals in 27 matches, which is the fewest of any club in the Eastern Conference. They have conceded 45, and seven wins, six draws and 14 losses put them 14th of 15 in the East.

Minus 13 is arithmetic. The 32 is the cause. A season gets explained by whichever of its numbers is the outlier, and for this one the outlier sits at the attacking end rather than the defensive one. Six of the 27 matches ended level, which is the same problem wearing a more respectable result.

FC Cincinnati visit Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, October 10, nine days from now. Long enough to think seriously about where the next goal is supposed to come from.

Saturday's Division Series opener in Los Angeles already has a date, a venue, a 4 p.m. ET start and a 100-win opponent. What it does not have is a second team — the bracket is still carrying that line as the literal string ATL/PHI. Tonight a placeholder turns into a name. Nobody has said yet who will be standing on the mound when it does.
