Atlanta lost a home game it led by eight with 2:31 left, and the seed moved further than the record did: eighth in the NFC to tenth, first team out to third. The Hawks host one end of their summer's biggest trade tonight, and Atlanta United finally have dates on their last six matches.

Atlanta led by eight with 2:31 left at home and lost in overtime. The record moved one game; the standings moved further than that.

The seed is the number that actually changed. Atlanta sat eighth in the NFC on Sunday morning -- first team out, one place from the field. This morning they are tenth, and most of that had nothing to do with them: four clubs settled on 3-2, and a Rams side on 2-2 carries one fewer defeat. Seattle holds eighth now. Atlanta are the third team out.

Three clubs in the conference are on 2-3 and Atlanta is the best of them, which is a thin thing to be best at. The division reads more simply: second, behind Carolina on 2-2. Next is Chicago at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Sunday at 1:00 on Fox. Carolina spend the same afternoon at Philadelphia, one of the two other clubs on 2-3, so the division and the seed are both in play off one slate.

Michael Penix Jr. is questionable with a rib injury, a designation filed eight minutes after the final whistle. He said afterward that he does not believe it will be a long-term issue, and that knowing him, he will be ready to go next week. Kevin Stefanski said Penix has imaging scheduled for Monday, and that the club needs more testing before it sets a timeline. Those are two statements from two people, and the distance between them is the entire state of knowledge this morning. No imaging result has been reported.

Two Falcons pieces this morning, neither of them a recap. Miles has the quarterback room: Atlanta dressed two left-handed passers by design and rotated them mid-drive. Dex has the down nobody checked -- the punt that got relitigated all night was fourth and 6, and the outlet leading the argument printed fourth and 8.

Oklahoma City are at State Farm Arena tonight at 7:00. Friday the Hawks are in Dallas. Those are the last two exhibitions of the preseason, and they are also the two ends of the same trade: on July 19 Atlanta sent Zaccharie Risacher, the first pick of the 2024 draft, to Dallas, and received Luguentz Dort from Oklahoma City. Neither game counts for anything. Both put the summer's biggest decision on the floor in front of the clubs that made the other half of it.

Whether it was the right call is a question, and it stays one tonight. No rotation has been reported, and exhibition minutes do not settle rotations. What waits on the other side of the October 21 opener at Orlando is less forgiving than the date alone suggests: Charlotte on the Friday, Houston at State Farm Arena on the Saturday, Houston again in Houston on the Monday. Four games in six days to open, and the same opponent twice inside three. Simone has the national read on what the rest of the league expects from this roster, and it is worth your time.

Both league championship series are live inside the same evening and Atlanta is in neither. NLCS Game 2 is this afternoon at five in Milwaukee, where the Brewers took Game 1 by a run on Sunday and lead the Dodgers 1-0. The ALCS opens at eight, Cleveland at Tampa Bay. Nothing Tuesday; Game 3 is Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium.

Atlanta's October closed on Wednesday the 7th at Truist Park, and the series field has already recorded it: LAD win series 3-1, completed. Before that, ninety-four wins, the National League East, and a wild card round taken off Philadelphia two games to one. That line is finished, and the bracket keeps going without it.

Yesterday this brief said there were six matches left and no dates attached to any of them. The dates exist now, all six, and the shape they make is not a kind one. Wednesday at CF Montreal, the only club in the conference below Atlanta. Inter Miami at home on Saturday. Chicago at home on the 24th. New York City FC away on the 28th. Toronto at home on the 1st. Then Red Bull New York away on November 7, Decision Day, when all fifteen matches in the league kick off at once.

Three of those six are against clubs Atlanta would have to climb over, and the last of them is against a club sitting exactly on the line. The arithmetic, stated plainly: 27 points from 28 matches, 14th of 15 in the Eastern Conference, nine points behind the ninth place that qualifies -- a figure two clubs hold at the same time. Eighteen points remain available, and five clubs sit in between. That is not elimination. It is also not a race. Tito has how it got here.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium took two Atlanta home defeats in two days -- Atlanta United on Saturday evening, the Falcons on Sunday night. Its next Atlanta fixture is Saturday at 7:30, United against Inter Miami, four hours after the Dream open the WNBA Finals at Chase Center. The only Atlanta club currently playing for a championship is the one that will not be in the building.
