Three Atlanta fixtures land inside twenty-two hours this weekend, and the first of them is a WNBA Finals game. The only thing still unsettled about it is whether Allisha Gray can play.
Three Atlanta fixtures land inside twenty-two hours this weekend, and the first of them is a Finals. The Dream tip off against Golden State at Chase Center at 3:30 Saturday afternoon, Atlanta United host Inter Miami at Mercedes-Benz Stadium exactly four hours later, and the Falcons take Chicago at 1:00 on Sunday.
The Dream are in the Finals for the first time since 2013, having swept New York 3-0 in the semifinals to get there. They arrive as the top seed in the East, fourth in the league bracket. Golden State are 5-1 this postseason rather than unbeaten -- they lost a game to Dallas, then swept the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in three -- and neither franchise has ever won a title.
Simone has the two Dream players this series is actually historic for. It is the best thing on the site this morning.
Falcons
Michael Penix Jr. practised without limitations on Wednesday and again on Thursday, and the club says he starts Sunday absent a setback. That is movement rather than suspense. The rib injury he picked up late in the overtime defeat to Baltimore is a separate thing from the knee that cost him the first two games of the season, and it has quietly stopped being this week's question.
Chicago's quarterback has not stopped being theirs. Caleb Williams returned to full practice on Thursday for the first time since September 18, said he does not yet know whether he plays, and still has protocols in front of him. Ben Johnson has not said who starts if he cannot. Miles has what that costs a defensive staff, and the short version is that Atlanta spent the week installing against three quarterbacks instead of one.
Drake London has 488 yards on 27 catches from 37 targets in five games, and no touchdowns. Dex found where the zero comes from, and it is not London. The Falcons are second in the NFC South at 2-3, a record they have assembled out of 0-2 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and 2-1 on the road. That is an unusual split to carry into a home game.
Hawks
ESPN's injury record for Mouhamed Gueye now carries a return date, and the date is October 21. That is the night Atlanta open the season at Orlando.
Gueye had surgery in mid-July to repair a fractured left foot, with a three-to-four-month re-evaluation attached to it. Three to four months from mid-July runs to mid-November. So the date now sitting in that file is the optimistic end of its own range, which makes it a projection rather than a plan.
There is no cover behind it, either. Henri Veesaar tore his right ACL in September and is formally out for the season, which leaves Quin Snyder opening the year with Onyeka Okongwu, Jock Landale and a rookie. ESPN's own note on Gueye names the beneficiary: Zuby Ejiofor, the 23rd pick, out of St. John's, who could establish a key role off the bench behind Okongwu and Landale.
Six regulars sat out Monday's win for rest, and every one of those entries carries tonight's date as the return -- the preseason finale at Dallas, 8:00. It is the last look anybody gets. The question worth carrying into next Wednesday is narrower than the season: does Gueye play on the 21st?
Braves
The collective bargaining agreement expires at 11:59 p.m. ET on December 1. The Winter Meetings -- the week baseball normally conducts its business -- fall after that, in early December, in San Diego.
A lockout is not on the calendar. December 1 is. The reason that date gets treated as a cliff rather than a deadline is that the previous agreement expired on December 1, 2021, and the owners locked the players out the same night. What follows this one is an expectation and a choice, not an appointment.
Atlanta spent Thursday on the 40-man roster: Brett Wisely's contract selected, DaShawn Keirsey Jr. sent outright to Gwinnett. Luke Williams elected free agency the same day and left the organisation, but Wednesday's outright had already taken him off the 40-man, so the depth chart is where it was. It is the clock running toward the first. Ellis has the ledger and what it says about how much winter Atlanta actually has.
Atlanta United
Inter Miami come to Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 7:30 Saturday, two-nil winners at home on Wednesday and already into the playoffs. Atlanta sit six points off the 36 that currently marks the last qualifying place, with five matches left and one of the two clubs level on that total holding a match in hand.
What is strange is how little Wednesday changed. Atlanta won by three on the road, both of those clubs lost, and the gap closed by three points. Tito has the reason this particular fixture carries more than the table does, and it goes back two Novembers.
One more thing.
The only call in Atlanta sports that nobody has made yet is Allisha Gray's, and it is not hers to make. The Dream's four-time All-Star guard hurt her left hand in the semifinal opener against New York on October 4, has not played since, and had what she described on Thursday as a minor surgical procedure she needed in order to have a chance at this series. She was a limited participant in Thursday's practice and is still day-to-day. No Dream injury report has been released. Karl Smesko has two game plans ready and says they are not drastically different. Gray's own account is the plainest thing anyone has said about Saturday: she feels good, the progress has been good, as long as she can shoot she is good -- and she is going to leave it up to the medical staff. Nobody in that room has said anything yet. Everything else about this weekend is already on the schedule.

Nobody in Atlanta plays today, and it is the last day this week on which nothing is settled. Friday decides a Cup group game, Saturday a season, and Sunday a home game four thousand miles from home.

Almost everything on Atlanta's board this morning is an estimate - a hip, an ankle, a hamstring, a table position. The exception is a Gold Glove won by a man who filed for free agency three days before it was announced.

There is no NBA game anywhere tonight. Then Atlanta's week arrives all at once — Washington twice inside three days, two fixtures on Saturday, Madrid on Sunday.
