Atlanta can be one win from a WNBA championship by midnight, and the argument in this city this morning is about which room Thursday gets played in. Updated Tuesday: Game 6 has since been set for State Farm Arena, at 12:30 PM on Thursday.
Update, Tuesday October 27: Game 6 is at State Farm Arena, Thursday October 29, at 12:30 PM EDT. The Gateway Center Arena fallback described below is off, and the Friday-night proposal reported below is not what was agreed -- a Game 7, if necessary, stays Saturday October 31 at Chase Center. Atlanta also lost Game 5 in San Francisco on Monday night, 64-55, and now trail the Finals 3-2, which makes Thursday's noon tip an elimination game. Simone has the resolution. Everything below stands as filed on Monday morning.
Atlanta can go to bed tonight one win from a WNBA championship, and the argument in this city this morning is not about basketball. It is about a room.
Game 5 is tonight, 8:00 PM EDT at Chase Center in San Francisco, and the series line on ESPN's feed reads "Series tied 2-2." Golden State took Game 1 68-64 and Game 4 67-62, by four points and by five. Atlanta took Game 2 79-65 and Game 3 97-71, by fourteen and twenty-six. A 32-12 regular season against a 30-14 one, and four games have produced no pattern.
Thursday's Game 6, which 2-2 guarantees, was as of Monday morning slated for Gateway Center Arena in College Park, which holds approximately 3,500 for basketball. State Farm Arena holds 17,044, and the Dream have played all five of their home playoff games there this postseason. College Park is not Atlanta. "We are waiting to hear from the league if any changes can be made to allow us to play in State Farm Arena. If not, the game will be played in Gateway Center Arena," a Dream spokesperson told ESPN on Sunday.
Nothing was settled as of Monday morning. ESPN reported a live proposal to move Game 6 to Friday October 30 at State Farm Arena and push a possible Game 7 from Saturday the 31st to Tuesday November 3, supported by the WNBA only with both clubs' agreement, with the Valkyries raising concerns. ESPN's venue field for Thursday was still empty at 7:12 this morning. Tilt filed that empty field as a question on Saturday, before the national press arrived at it.
Two men have spoken publicly and they describe two different problems. Hawks and State Farm Arena CEO Steve Koonin told ESPN on October 13, when Games 3 and 4 were moved into his building, that the club had canvassed State Farm, the league and the television networks, and that "everyone had major conviction: let's do everything we can to make it happen." Ten days later, to 92.9 The Game's Mike Conti on Friday October 23 -- the night before Game 4, series at 2-1 -- the account pointed outward. Per Conti, Koonin said the arena had offered multiple dates and that rescheduling is solely a league decision, and told fans to "write your congressman."
The third account is ESPN's. Stakeholders are arguing over whether the onus belongs to the NBA to move regular-season games, with pushback that the domino effects are too complicated. And on one specific fix, a Thursday matinee and a second doubleheader, it was the Hawks who were open and the league that found a weekday Finals matinee less desirable. "There are problems with all the solutions," one source told ESPN. Three accounts, no villain.
What resolves this is already signed. The Dream become a full-time State Farm Arena tenant in 2027, all twenty-five home games, announced earlier this month. The 3,500-seat room is not an insult. It is the last bill for a move Atlanta has already made.
Hawks
The rematch is tonight at 8:30 at Toyota Center, two days after Houston won at State Farm Arena, and Tilt covered that loss twice without once naming who Houston were missing: Fred VanVleet, Steven Adams and Marcus Smart, all three absent from the complete Saturday box score. Simone has the ledger. Tonight is not a rerun of it -- Adams is ruled out again with a different injury, Smart is questionable, VanVleet carries no designation either way.
Falcons
Atlanta beat a 6-0 San Francisco side 29-20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and handed them their first defeat. The table moved the wrong way anyway.
Tampa Bay went to Charlotte and beat Carolina 43-13. Carolina lost by thirty and are still in front of Atlanta: 3-3 on the season against 3-4, the conference's fourth seed against the ninth. Tampa Bay and New Orleans are both 2-5. The ninth is provisional too, because Dallas at Philadelphia kicks off at 8:15 tonight with both clubs reading 2-4, and whoever wins lands on 3-4, Atlanta's exact record, inside the tiebreak band Atlanta currently top. The next Falcons football is Sunday at 1:00 PM EST in Tampa.
Atlanta United
Three matches left, not two: New York City FC on Wednesday at Citi Field, Toronto at home on November 1, Red Bull New York on Decision Day, November 7.
Fourteenth of fifteen in the East on thirty points, and the most honest reading of that table is the feed's own -- ranks one through nine carry a qualification note and Atlanta's row carries none. Tito took the one encouraging number in this run and opened it. It did not survive.
Braves
The winter argument has moved off the roster and onto the staff.
Before anybody takes a side on the hitting coach: the club's own staff list, pulled live this morning, runs thirteen names, and two of them coach hitting. Tim Hyers holds the title. Darnell Coles is the assistant. Walt Weiss manages both.
Every thread in that argument is aggregator traffic, and not one claim underneath it is reportable. Ellis has the one that is, and his case is that the question is aimed at the wrong tenure.
One more thing.
Game 5 tips at 8:00 tonight at Chase Center. The Hawks tip at 8:30 at Toyota Center. Thirty minutes apart, two Atlanta teams, each playing the opponent that beat it on Saturday, each in the other club's building.
A city that spent the weekend arguing about which room it gets on Thursday will spend tonight watching both of its teams play in somebody else's.
The Tilt
Atlanta argued two weeks for the room and got it, at 12:30 on a Thursday.

Nobody in Atlanta plays today, and it is the last day this week on which nothing is settled. Friday decides a Cup group game, Saturday a season, and Sunday a home game four thousand miles from home.

Almost everything on Atlanta's board this morning is an estimate - a hip, an ankle, a hamstring, a table position. The exception is a Gold Glove won by a man who filed for free agency three days before it was announced.

There is no NBA game anywhere tonight. Then Atlanta's week arrives all at once — Washington twice inside three days, two fixtures on Saturday, Madrid on Sunday.
