Atlanta United can be finished tonight in Queens without losing a match, and the Dream face elimination tomorrow afternoon. Two Atlanta seasons could be over before Thursday dinner.
Two Atlanta seasons can be over by tomorrow afternoon. Here is your Wednesday.
Hawks
Atlanta are 2-2, and both of those wins happened in other people's buildings — Orlando on the 21st, Charlotte on the 23rd, the second one by forty-seven points. The only game they have played at State Farm Arena this season was the home opener, which Houston won 121-114. Miami arrive tonight at seven at 0-4, last in the Eastern Conference by seed. Dex has the take on what beating them would actually be worth, and his answer is not much.
Cleveland come to the same floor tomorrow at eight, 2-1 and winners of two straight. Between those two games, that floor has a Finals on it.
The Dream
The ownership group — Larry and Robyn Gottesdiener, Suzanne Abair and Renee Montgomery — published an open letter to the city last night. The number in it is two months. That is how long ago they say they raised the conflict between the Finals schedule and the Hawks' calendar with the league, and how long they say it went without the urgency it deserved. The letter thanks the Hawks. The grievance is pointed at the WNBA, and Simone published both of those arguments yesterday morning, before the letter existed.
Golden State lead the series 3-2. Game 6 is tomorrow at 12:30 at State Farm Arena and Atlanta are eliminated if they lose it.
One set of numbers from Monday that has not had enough attention. Atlanta took their second-highest shot volume of the series in Game 5 and their fewest free throws of the entire postseason — eleven more field goal attempts than Game 4, and seventeen fewer trips to the line. The team-level complaint about the officiating is supported by that pair of figures, and supported well. The specific night Angel Reese attached it to is not: her own foul-draw rate per shot attempt was flat across the two games she named, and the game it actually fell in was Game 3, which Atlanta won to take the series lead. A true complaint can still have the wrong date on it, and the date is the part that gets argued about.
Atlanta United
Atlanta are at New York City FC tonight at 7:30, at Citi Field, a baseball ground borrowed for football. Three other matches kick off alongside it and matter as much as theirs: Red Bull New York at New England, D.C. United at Toronto, and Columbus at Dallas an hour behind.
Fourteenth on thirty points with three matches left, so thirty-nine is the ceiling. Red Bull New York hold the ninth and final qualifying place on thirty-nine right now, and they are the club Atlanta finish the season against. Tito laid out the five clubs that have to fall and exactly what each of them has to do — read it before kickoff, if only for the detail that MLS breaks ties on wins rather than goal difference, which is the only reason there is still arithmetic here at all.
Falcons
Four outlets published on Michael Penix Jr. inside twenty-four hours — The Athletic, Sports Illustrated, the Journal-Constitution, SportsTalkATL — and all four landed in the same place. Miles spent yesterday arguing close to the opposite. This morning he split the season ledger by starting quarterback and found the two September games that had been holding up his own thesis. Plus thirty-six across Penix's five starts. Minus thirty-eight across the two Cooper Rush started. Those add to the minus two the season carries, with nothing left over.
It is a column that changes its author's mind in public and shows the working. We do not publish many of those.
Atlanta are 3-4 at the ninth seed in the conference, half a game behind Carolina in a division where nobody has a winning record. Tampa Bay on Sunday. The trade deadline is Tuesday November 10 — Indianapolis have already sent Quenton Nelson to Seattle and DeForest Buckner to San Francisco, and Atlanta have done nothing at all.
Braves
Philadelphia named Peter Fatse their hitting coach yesterday, replacing Kevin Long. An NL East club has now resolved the exact question Atlanta's offseason conversation keeps circling, which would be a tidier story if Atlanta did not already have its answer.
It does, and it is on this site. Ellis checked the tenure against the run ledger on Sunday: Tim Hyers has had the job two seasons. The collapse the discourse keeps hanging on him belongs to Kevin Seitzer's last year. That is not a defence of anybody. It is just the correct name on the correct season, which turns out to be hard to come by.
The offseason has not formally opened. Milwaukee lead Tampa Bay 3-1 and can finish it tonight at Tropicana Field, which is the same building where Tampa Bay won Game 4 in twelve innings to still be alive.
One more thing.
Baltimore hired a general manager yesterday. Philadelphia hired a hitting coach. Indianapolis traded two of their best players before November. Around the league the machinery has already started on next season, and all four Atlanta clubs are still busy with this one — two of them for about another day.

Nobody in Atlanta plays today, and it is the last day this week on which nothing is settled. Friday decides a Cup group game, Saturday a season, and Sunday a home game four thousand miles from home.

Almost everything on Atlanta's board this morning is an estimate - a hip, an ankle, a hamstring, a table position. The exception is a Gold Glove won by a man who filed for free agency three days before it was announced.

There is no NBA game anywhere tonight. Then Atlanta's week arrives all at once — Washington twice inside three days, two fixtures on Saturday, Madrid on Sunday.
