On Friday this brief said Monday night matters more to the Falcons' season than Saturday does to the Braves'. It is Saturday, first pitch is at four o'clock, and half of that sentence does not survive the arithmetic.
Friday's edition of this brief said Monday night matters more to the Falcons' season than Saturday does to the Braves'. It is Saturday, first pitch is at four o'clock in Los Angeles, and that sentence needs qualifying rather than defending.
Braves
Atlanta opens the Division Series at Dodger Stadium at 4 p.m. ET as the road club, series level at nothing, against a club that won 100 games, on that club's field. Los Angeles has named Tarik Skubal, a left-hander. Atlanta had not named a starter as of 7:38 this morning.
The half of Friday's sentence that holds is the floor. A best-of-five opener is one of as many as five, Atlanta is guaranteed three games in this series whatever happens this afternoon, and today moves a series score and nothing else. No standing in any of the four leagues changes because of it.
The half that does not hold is the ceiling. Of the five dates filed for this series, exactly one is a certain night at Truist Park, and it is Tuesday; Games 4 and 5 are both conditional on the series going that far. Part of the price of losing this afternoon is the chance that Tuesday becomes the end of Atlanta's home season. Leverage on a short runway and leverage on a long one are different quantities, and Friday's sentence compared them as though they were the same.
Ellis has the pitching-availability ladder. Dex has the number the Los Angeles Times printed about Atlanta against left-handed starting pitchers.
Falcons
Atlanta is 1-2, and so are Carolina and New Orleans, a three-way tie enumerated club by club from the division standings this morning rather than read off a summary string. Atlanta carries the worst point differential of the three at minus 17, against Carolina's plus six and New Orleans's minus two, and on ESPN's own playoff-seed ordering Carolina sits fourth in the conference while Atlanta sits thirteenth.
The easy reading of the 52-point swing from Week 2 to Week 3, minus 31 at home to Carolina and plus 21 at Green Bay, is that a different football team showed up at Lambeau. The box scores decline to support it. In the 31-point home defeat Atlanta out-rushed Carolina 157 yards to 68, held the ball longer and finished within one first down of them, then gave it away five times to none and did not reach the red zone once. At Green Bay it turned the ball over once and scored on four of five red-zone trips. That is one football team whose margin is set by giveaways and red-zone access, which is a narrower diagnosis than two different teams and a harder one to coach around inside a week.
Week 4 is Monday at the Caesars Superdome, 8:15 p.m. ET, and it is a division game against the third club in that tie. Division results are what put Atlanta behind Carolina: the 3-34 loss is the single division result on Atlanta's record, and New Orleans has not played one at all. This afternoon moves a series score. Monday moves a division. That part of Friday's sentence stands.
Hawks
Preseason opens Monday at 7 p.m. ET against Memphis at State Farm Arena, and the thing worth watching in an exhibition is the lineup card. Two guards on the 20-man roster read this morning arrived with the same job description: CJ McCollum started 25 of his 41 Atlanta games last season, and Luguentz Dort started all 69 he played in Oklahoma City in the same one. Monday is the first public information about which of them comes off the bench.
Henri Veesaar is out and three others are listed day-to-day, with no detail attached to any of the four on the payload that carries them. Simone has the standing argument about what this roster is, and Monday is the first evidence available from outside of camp.
Atlanta United
This brief has been carrying the MLS qualification rule as unread. It is read now: the top nine of fifteen in each conference qualify, seeds one through seven into a best-of-three series and seeds eight and nine into a single wild-card match. That makes the arithmetic sayable. The season is 34 matches, Atlanta United have taken 27 points from 27 of them, seven remain, and seven times three is 21, which puts the ceiling at 48 against a ninth-place line sitting at 33. Atlanta United are not eliminated.
They are also not close. Ninth means passing four clubs rather than catching one, and the line moves by itself, since New York City FC have the same seven matches left that Atlanta do. Seven wins in 27 is the form that ceiling is built on top of. The club sits 14th of 15 in the Eastern Conference with Montreal alone beneath them, and it does not play again until FC Cincinnati visit Mercedes-Benz Stadium on the 10th, a 14-day stoppage that began on September 26 and landed on a club six points off a line it needs fixtures to close.
One more thing.
This brief said yesterday that the schedule reopens at four o'clock this afternoon. It reopens at one, in Cleveland. Four o'clock is when Atlanta's share of it starts, and Atlanta's share is being played in California.
None of this city's four clubs is at home between now and Monday evening. What Monday evening brings is an exhibition. The first baseball at Truist Park is Tuesday, and Tuesday is also the last date this bracket promises Atlanta at home. A city with a club in the Division Series will watch the whole of its October weekend on television, which is the part of being the lower seed that the standings do not show.
The Tilt
Monday still moves a division; Saturday moves a series on a much shorter runway.

Nobody in Atlanta plays today, and it is the last day this week on which nothing is settled. Friday decides a Cup group game, Saturday a season, and Sunday a home game four thousand miles from home.

Almost everything on Atlanta's board this morning is an estimate - a hip, an ankle, a hamstring, a table position. The exception is a Gold Glove won by a man who filed for free agency three days before it was announced.
