A 21-point road win landed a little before half past eleven last night and a Division Series game starts at six tonight. In between, a claim Tilt filed on Sunday about how many home playoff games this city had been promised stopped being true.

Atlanta banked a 21-point road win a little before half past eleven last night, and it has a Division Series game at home at six tonight. A result in hand and a larger one twelve hours out.

The series comes home level at 1-1, and it comes home with two dates on it instead of one.

Dex wrote on Sunday morning, with Atlanta down 0-1 in the series, that this city had been promised one game at Truist Park and not two. That was correct when he filed it. Atlanta then won in Los Angeles on Sunday night, and Wednesday's game now reads if-necessary N on the same filing that had carried the flag, so both Truist Park games get played. Nobody was wrong. The club moved the fact underneath the sentence, which is the better way for a receipt to come due, and this is the last morning it is worth collecting: once tonight is played, Wednesday is simply the next game.

First pitch is 6:00 PM ET, and Wednesday is filed for six as well. Chris Sale starts for Atlanta against Yoshinobu Yamamoto, both named on the hydrated schedule this morning, with Games 4 and 5 still returning no probable on either side. Ellis has what Atlanta's manager, Walt Weiss, says about why tonight rather than Game 2.

Forty-five to twenty-four at the Caesars Superdome, as the road team, and Atlanta is 2-2.

Two Tilt pieces on that game arrive at the same caveat from opposite directions, and a reader of either will miss it. Miles has the run game, 35 carries for 205 team yards on Monday, and spends a section narrowing his own finding, on the grounds that both of the fronts it rests on had been run through before Atlanta ever got there. Dex has the national room, where three of six analysts inside a single outlet attached a not-yet condition that the headline above them carried none of. Atlanta's own analyst and the skeptics outside the building reached the same discount by different routes. Agreement arrived at from two directions is worth more than either route to it.

The number that keeps it honest: Atlanta has scored 93 points in three road games. It has played once at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and scored three points there, losing 34-3 to Carolina in Week 2. Monday drew Atlanta level with Carolina on record at 2-2. Carolina is 2-2 as well, is seeded four spots higher, and still holds the head-to-head from that afternoon.

Baltimore is 3-1 and arrives Sunday at 8:20 PM ET. The defeat on that record came at home, to the New Orleans side Atlanta just beat by 21. Chicago and San Francisco follow it, both at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Memphis took the preseason opener 132-123 at State Farm Arena, and Atlanta won three of the four quarters.

That is the arithmetic the overnight framing dropped. Atlanta took the first 35-32, the third 37-29 and the fourth 25-22, then lost the second 49-26. A 23-point hole inside an otherwise even night nets out to nine, and a final score has nowhere to put that. Memphis scored 81 points before halftime and 51 after it. Nothing from any of it enters a standing; the regular season opens Wednesday, October 21, at Orlando.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ran a photo gallery of the night. Simone has that gallery and the sentence she filed in September about what a deeper rotation has to show. Two of the six players NBA.com listed as Atlanta's key additions for this season did not play at all, and another of the six played 11 minutes. The availability argument is hers too.

Idle until Saturday, and the table has names on it.

Atlanta are 14th of 15 in the Eastern Conference on 27 points from 27 matches, 7-6-14, with a goal difference of minus 13. Six points above them sit three clubs on 33: Red Bull New York, New York City FC and FC Cincinnati. Atlanta have already hosted two of the three, beating Red Bull New York 2-1 on August 15 and drawing 2-2 with New York City FC on September 26, and they host the third on Saturday, when FC Cincinnati come to Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 7:30 PM ET six points up having played a match fewer.

So the gap is neither abstract nor far away. All three of the clubs holding it have Mercedes-Benz Stadium on their own schedule, and Atlanta have already spent two of those three evenings, one on a win and one on a draw.

Nobody can be sent home tonight. Atlanta is level at 1-1 in a best-of-five, so a loss at six o'clock does not end the season and a win does not end Los Angeles's. Five days ago, against Philadelphia, a loss would have ended it. From a seat in the building those two nights are indistinguishable, and they are not the same night. A crowd does not grade the bracket it is watching. For once, the gap between how an evening feels and what it can actually cost runs in the comfortable direction.

The Tilt

Tonight is enormous and survivable, and Atlanta rarely gets both at once.
