Two decisions are coming, one this afternoon in Flowery Branch and one tonight at Truist Park, and this brief has neither. What it has is a trade board dated Wednesday, a lineup card with a hole in it, and a uniform nobody has described.

Falcons

Bleacher Report's Week 1 trade board went up Wednesday, September 9, with Mac Jones at No. 2 and one line under his name: "Potential Suitors: Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns." Wednesday was the day before the oblique. Whoever wrote Atlanta into that column did it with Tua Tagovailoa healthy, Cooper Rush named behind him and Michael Penix Jr. listed full.

Two Tilt desks take it apart this morning. Miles has priced the pick against the roster, and his conclusion is that a second-round pick is not an insurance premium, it is a verdict. Dex has the timeline: a bet against Penix, made before anybody got hurt. Neither found an outlet reporting that Atlanta and San Francisco have spoken.

What this brief does not have is the document that matters. The Game Status Report is due Friday afternoon, 4:00 PM by Miles's reading, and Kevin Stefanski is scheduled to speak Friday and had not as of this filing. Until both land, Sunday's quarterback at Acrisure Stadium, 1:00, Atlanta the road team, is a question this edition can only frame.

Braves

The Braves' problem this morning is a lineup card, and the club has the afternoon to fill the hole in it. Lane Thomas is headed to the 15-day injured list with a right intercostal injury, per Walt Weiss by way of the Associated Press, and headed to is still the ceiling: the league's transactions feed had not posted the move as of this filing, and Thomas is listed active.

Thursday showed what the outfield looks like without him. Brewer Hicklen started in left, Michael Harris II in center, Ronald Acuña Jr. in right, and Mike Yastrzemski came off the bench for Hicklen in the eighth. Friday's alignment was not posted at filing, so who plays left against Aaron Nola is an afternoon fact.

The shelf is short. Thomas, the right-handed bat brought in from Kansas City, hit .171 with one home run in 21 games here. The other outfielders listed on the active roster are Hicklen, Yastrzemski and Mauricio Dubón, who is listed in left and played second on Thursday. That is the whole list until a call-up posts, and none has.

The standings did not move overnight because the two clubs above Atlanta did not play. The lead over Philadelphia stays 4.0 on equal games, 147 each with 15 to play; the gap to the second bye stays 3.5 with Los Angeles a game in hand; the magic number is 11 by MLB's count. Hawks

The NBA and Nike named eight franchises Wednesday night for a heritage uniform called Specter: Knicks, Celtics, Lakers, 76ers, Warriors, Pistons, Kings and Hawks, with details, per ESPN, "inspired by each franchise's history, city heritage and fan culture." The eight own 53 of the league's 84 titles. Atlanta's share of the 53 is one, and it was won in St. Louis.

That is the whole problem with the phrase. This franchise entered the NBA in 1949 as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, moved to Milwaukee in 1951, to St. Louis in 1955 and to Atlanta in 1968. The 1958 title belongs to the third address, a city the club left ten years later. City heritage means something different for a club with four hometowns and one banner.

Several of the other seven have been described down to the colorway. Atlanta's has been shown and not described: no colorway, no motif, no on-court date beyond Nike's "later this fall." The open question is which history it is being asked to remember. If the answer is Atlanta, the honest version starts in 1968 and has no title in it. If the answer is the franchise, it is a St. Louis banner with a Georgia address. Also on the beat: CJ McCollum turns 35 a week from Saturday.

Atlanta United

Atlanta United are at Audi Field on Saturday, 7:30, D.C. United, Apple TV, and two facts the table does not show are worth carrying in. The first is D.C.'s last six, by date: draws with Nashville and at Montréal, defeats to New England and at Charlotte, a scoreless draw with LAFC, then on Wednesday, D.C. United 2, Columbus Crew 1 at Audi Field on two Tai Baribo goals. One win in six, and it came the same night as Orlando City 3, Atlanta United 2 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The second is the only meeting this year: March 21, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta United 0, D.C. United 0. Atlanta have not scored against D.C. in 2026, and Saturday is the last regular-season chance to change that.

Nobody in MLS played Thursday, so the table stands: Atlanta 14th of 15 on 22 points, D.C. 11th on 28, ninth New York City FC on 29. Tito's read of Wednesday is still the one. Neither club has published an availability report for this fixture, and this brief will not guess at one.

One more thing.

Twice this week Atlanta's name turned up on a list drawn up somewhere else. A trade board published Wednesday listed the Falcons as a suitor for a quarterback a day before they had a reason to be one. A uniform program announced in Brooklyn on Wednesday night has the Hawks wearing a city heritage whose only banner was raised in St. Louis. Both were finished before anyone in Atlanta was asked. The two documents that decide this weekend, a lineup card and a designations report, get written this afternoon at Truist Park and in Flowery Branch. Being discussed and being decided are different things, and this morning the city is only one of them.
