The Falcons left Pittsburgh thinner on both lines than they arrived, and the discourse had picked its villain before the club said a word about either. The Braves open three at Wrigley Field tonight against a club with a September number of its own, the East line above Atlanta United moved on a night they did not play, and the Hawks have a city for training camp but not yet a calendar.

Falcons

Pittsburgh 20, Atlanta 13 at Acrisure Stadium, and the record reads 0-1. Miles has the four columns that lost it; Dex has why Pittsburgh never needed a fifth sack. The Monday list, as the club wrote it on Sunday afternoon: Chris Lindstrom was hurt early in the fourth quarter trying to tackle T.J. Watt on the interception return, gave way to Kyle Hinton on the next drive and was ruled out with a concussion. Da'Shawn Hand was ruled out with a knee injury during the second quarter. Neither returned. Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. were inactive. Nothing exists for Week 2 on any of the four; the club has published nothing since 8:06 on Sunday night, and the Monday statuses arrive after this edition. A concussion has a protocol, not a timeline, and the return date ESPN prints beside every name on its list, Lindstrom's included, is next Sunday's game, not a projection.

Two arguments were running before the list was. The first is the kicker. Pro Football Network had the cut-him call aggregated by 5:48 on Sunday evening under "Send Nick Folk to the Retirement Home." The record the replies skip is ESPN's: 29 of 30, 21 of 22, 28 of 29, one miss a season for three seasons, then two on Sunday alone. The room that watched those three seasons voted Folk a captain on September 3, in the same vote that made Lindstrom one for the third time, which puts two of the five captains in this morning's two Falcons stories. Dex has the two ballots side by side.

The second is Sunday's opponent. Chicago 59, Carolina 37 in Charlotte, with 291 rushing yards allowed on 39 carries, and the reigning NFC South champions, 0-1 like the rest of the division, come to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday at 1:00 for the home opener, with Green Bay at Lambeau Field the Thursday night after. That box score asks a question of Atlanta's right guard, and Miles has the scheme answer.

Braves

Sunday's loss, Philadelphia 9, Atlanta 4, is Ellis's, and it left the row where it was: 88-62, first, five clear of Philadelphia with twelve to play for each, the magic number seven by MLB's count, and Philadelphia idle tonight. The race still open is the other one. Atlanta sit third in the National League behind Milwaukee and Los Angeles, which is outside the two byes; five behind Milwaukee is the feed's own figure, and two and a half behind Los Angeles is Tilt's subtraction, with Los Angeles holding a game in hand. The club across the diamond at 7:40 has the opposite problem. Chicago are 83-67, second in the Central, ten back, two from elimination there by MLB's count, and at the same time hold the first wild-card line, level on record with Philadelphia and a game and a half above San Diego, who have won seven straight. Reynaldo López is listed for his thirteenth start of the year, 4-4 with a 4.13 ERA, against David Peterson, 4-2 with a 4.41 ERA since a June trade from the Mets. Ellis drew the line on September 9, "One quality start in twelve is not an October starter," and he grades tonight against it.

Hawks

The club said Friday, on its own account, that training camp is in Nashville this season, and the club's site adds nothing to that sentence. The dates, September 29 through October 2, and the venue, Vanderbilt's practice facility, are the AJC's Lauren L. Williams's, as Hoops Rumors relayed them, and not yet the club's. Williams also notes last year's camp was in Athens, which would make this a second straight camp held out of town. ESPN's scoreboard is empty, and its Atlanta transactions and news feeds carry nothing dated after Friday.

Atlanta United

The point at Audi Field is Tito's, and the table did not hold still behind it. On Sunday morning ninth in the East was Philadelphia Union on 30. On Sunday night it was Philadelphia Union 5, San Diego 0 at Snapdragon Stadium; Philadelphia moved to 33 and seventh, and ninth became FC Cincinnati on 32 from 24, with New York City FC eighth on the same points and the better goal difference. The line Atlanta chase rose two points on a night they did not play. Atlanta United are fourteenth on 23 from 25, nine below it, with nine to play and twenty-seven available. One East fixture comes before Saturday's slate, New York City FC against the Red Bulls on Friday night at Yankee Stadium, eighth against tenth. Whatever it returns, ninth stays on 32; a Red Bulls win would only change whose 32 it is and drop Cincinnati to tenth. Atlanta kick off at Portland on Saturday, 10:30 Eastern at Providence Park. Portland are eighth in the West on 32, W 9 D 5 L 11, and lost on Saturday, Dallas 2, Portland 1.

One more thing.

Chicago are two from elimination in the Central by MLB's count and hold the first wild-card line, both at once. Atlanta lead the NL East by five and are chasing a bye they do not hold. One club losing a race while leading another, one winning a race while chasing another, and at 7:40 they share a field. One game, four races, and not one of them can close tonight.
