Atlanta United

Atlanta United 1, Portland 0, Atlanta the visitors, a 10:30 kickoff that finished after midnight in the East. Alexey Miranchuk scored in the 28th minute, the match's only goal, and Lucas Hoyos made three saves, one for every Portland shot on target, behind a side that took 10 shots to Portland's 21, a second consecutive clean sheet. Tomás Jacob was taken off in the 32nd minute; the club's recap says that and no more. That is the box. Tito has the match, and what a road win of that shape is and is not.

What moved: a first win since August 23, and 26 points, level with Columbus on points and wins after Columbus 2, Montréal 0 on Saturday, with Atlanta 14th on goal difference; both clubs went from 23 to 26 on the night, and the order held. Cincinnati 2, Houston Dynamo 2 put ninth on 33, seven points from Atlanta with eight to play; Red Bull New York hold eighth on the same 33 by wins. Away, that is four without defeat. Portland, eighth in the West on Saturday morning, are ninth on the same 32 after the Galaxy won at Minnesota. The first of Atlanta's eight is New York City FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, 7:30.

Braves

Game three at Daikin Park, 2:10, Atlanta the visitors, in a series already won. Martín Pérez, 9-9 with a 3.07 ERA in 25 starts, is listed against Hunter Brown, 6-3 and 3.43 in 18, with 110 strikeouts in 97 innings. Pérez's last start was Tuesday at the Cubs, six innings and two earned runs, the win, and the one before it was seven scoreless against Tampa Bay; Brown's last was the same Tuesday against Kansas City, five innings, one run, ten strikeouts.

The berth has carried MLB's mark since Friday; the division is on an or. Philadelphia are at the Mets at 1:10, the last of four at Citi Field, Cristopher Sánchez listed against Jonah Tong. A Philadelphia loss clinches the East for Atlanta; so does an Atlanta win. Philadelphia's game is the earlier one, so the first of those can arrive before or during the Braves' game. If Philadelphia win and Atlanta lose, the same or carries to Tuesday, when Cincinnati come to Truist Park at 7:15 and Philadelphia host Milwaukee at 6:40. Today is the first of the seven left for each club.

Two rows from MLB's feeds. Los Angeles finished their Saturday, Los Angeles 10, San Francisco 4, so the order above Atlanta holds: Milwaukee, then Los Angeles, and both play after Atlanta's first pitch today, San Francisco at Los Angeles at 4:10 and Milwaukee at Baltimore at 7:20. And MLB's transactions feed carries a rehab assignment to Gwinnett for Robert Suarez, effective Saturday; he has been on the 60-day injured list since September 1 with right elbow inflammation, in the feed's words, and he did not pitch in Gwinnett's Saturday game. Falcons

Carolina at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, 1:00 on FOX, the home opener, Cooper Rush named for a second straight start with Jack Strand behind him, and the NFC South goes into Week 2 with all four clubs at 0-1. The club's Friday designations, Michael Penix Jr. and Billy Bowman Jr. out, Tua Tagovailoa doubtful, Chris Lindstrom and A.J. Terrell questionable, resolve on the inactives list, not here; nothing on that list is a fact yet. Carolina's designations have not changed since Friday.

Hawks

The regular season has a date with a club release behind it: the Hawks open at home against the Houston Rockets on Saturday, October 24, at State Farm Arena, announced by the club on August 13, and ESPN lists an 8:00 tip. Atlanta United host Chicago next door at Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 7:30 the same night.

One more thing.

Dex wrote on Wednesday that whoever starts Sunday starts Thursday, that nobody installs a different quarterback on a short week, and that four days is not an install; his own word for it was a read, not a report. At 6:00 this morning ESPN's Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter filed the report: "Michael Penix Jr., the Falcons' preferred starter, is nearing a return and could make his 2026 debut on Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers, according to sources." The same story has Tagovailoa practicing this week and possibly active on Thursday as well. The club's last word on Penix is Friday's designation, out for today. Rush starts at 1:00; Dex's call resolves Thursday night at Lambeau Field, 8:15; and the first document filed against it is a sourced report, the one kind of thing he said his read was not.
