Atlanta plays once today and the result is the only thing on the schedule that cannot change anything. Five games Atlanta is not in move a playoff opponent and a division position, and the last of them does not finish until roughly 7:30 tonight.
Both clubs chasing the last National League playoff spot lost on Saturday, which changed nothing, and Atlanta won a game that changed nothing either. What this Sunday actually settles gets settled in five buildings Atlanta is not in, and it does not finish settling until the evening.
Braves
Game 162 is at 3:10 in Miami, JR Ritchie against Janson Junk, and Atlanta cannot alter its own seed by playing it. The Braves are 94-67 with the East clinched, and the No. 3 seed belongs to the third-best division winner regardless: Milwaukee and Los Angeles are out of reach at 102-59 and 99-62, and a wild card cannot outrank a division winner.
The one thing still open is the sixth seed, and it is down to two clubs. Philadelphia are 87-74, Arizona 86-75, both lost on Saturday, and the one-game gap held. ESPN's tracker prints three branches for it and Philadelphia is the answer in two: "If Phillies win and D-backs lose: Phillies get in." There is no fourth branch printed, because both of them losing leaves Philadelphia a game clear anyway. Arizona need a win and a Philadelphia loss. Philadelphia need either one, alone.
All three games start within five minutes of each other, and Atlanta's is the one with nothing riding on it.
Ellis has the depth read on what an 8-3 win in a game nobody needed actually showed, and Dex has the opponent question, which is not the one most people are asking.
Falcons
Atlanta do not play until Monday, October 5, at the Caesars Superdome. The other three clubs in the division all play today, in three separate windows: Carolina at Cleveland at 1:00, Minnesota at Tampa Bay at 4:05, Las Vegas at New Orleans at 4:25. The NFC South does not stop moving until roughly 7:30 tonight, which is after the baseball has finished.
Atlanta are 1-2 and third in the division, on three games played against two apiece for everyone else. The part worth holding on to: Carolina can lose this afternoon, finish level with Atlanta on record, and Atlanta still does not pass them. Carolina are 1-0 in the division and Atlanta 0-1, on the strength of one game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Week 2 that finished Carolina 34, Atlanta 3. Atlanta spent that tiebreaker at home, before it was worth anything.
Two deadlines sit behind the scoreboard. New York have Jaxson Dart on injured reserve, the entry dated Thursday, knee, surgery, and two quarterbacks left on the roster. Tom Pelissero reported on Saturday that general manager Joe Schoen is working the phones and could move as soon as Monday. Monday is tomorrow, and Atlanta's next snap is eight days out. Miles has what that insurance is actually worth.
The other is Tuesday, the league's last day to move Baltimore's October 11 visit out of the Sunday night window. The rule is 12 days' notice. Miles made the case for leaving it alone.
Atlanta United
New York City FC led twice at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Atlanta United drew it 2-2, having opened the scoring in the wrong direction: the first goal of the match was an Atlanta own goal, in the fifth minute. Giuliano Galoppo levelled in the 10th. Jay Fortune levelled again in the 74th.
That is 27 points from 27 matches, 13th of 15 in the East. Seven fixtures remain, four of them at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and the next is not for 13 days: Cincinnati, October 10. Winning all seven would put Atlanta on 48. Ninth place, the last one that qualifies, sits on 33 this morning, with four clubs to climb over. That is the arithmetic. It is neither a verdict nor an encouragement.
Tito marked his own pre-match thesis against the result. Half of it held.
Hawks
Buddy Hield, traded out of Atlanta on Tuesday, has reportedly been traded again. Shams Charania reported on Saturday evening that Chicago are sending Rob Dillingham, the No. 8 pick in 2024 and still 21, to Charlotte for Hield and cash. Neither roster has moved: ESPN lists Hield on Charlotte and Dillingham on Chicago this morning, so it is agreed rather than done.
Take it as a receipt, not a verdict. Charlotte held the asset Atlanta sent out for less than a week and turned it into a 21-year-old former lottery pick. That clarifies what Atlanta's trade was, which is that Atlanta wanted Dorian Finney-Smith and the roster spots, and Hield was the currency. It does not establish that Atlanta undersold him, or that Dillingham was ever available to Atlanta. None of the reporting on either trade says what Atlanta was offered. Dex graded the trade on Tuesday's terms, and somebody else has now re-priced them.
Media day is Monday, and it is the first morning anyone in that building can be asked about any of this.
One more thing.
The league has until Tuesday to decide whether Baltimore's October 11 visit keeps its Sunday night window. Between now and Tuesday, Baltimore play once and Atlanta do not play at all.
Baltimore's game is this afternoon, against Dallas, at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro. So the last new evidence on the October 11 game itself gets produced in Brazil, on an afternoon when the other club in it is sitting at home. Nothing Atlanta does between now and Tuesday changes the ruling, because Atlanta does not do anything between now and Tuesday.

Nobody in Atlanta plays today, and it is the last day this week on which nothing is settled. Friday decides a Cup group game, Saturday a season, and Sunday a home game four thousand miles from home.

Almost everything on Atlanta's board this morning is an estimate - a hip, an ankle, a hamstring, a table position. The exception is a Gold Glove won by a man who filed for free agency three days before it was announced.

There is no NBA game anywhere tonight. Then Atlanta's week arrives all at once — Washington twice inside three days, two fixtures on Saturday, Madrid on Sunday.
