Atlanta's next baseball game has an opponent, a ballpark, a date and, as of yesterday, a start time. Nothing else on this city's calendar got more specific over the weekend, and one Atlanta club managed to go backwards without playing.
Braves
Philadelphia at Truist Park, tomorrow, 2 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. The National League Wild Card Series is best-of-three and every game of it is in Atlanta: Game 1 Tuesday, Game 2 Wednesday in the same afternoon window, Game 3 Thursday if it is needed. Both of the first two games start in the middle of a working afternoon. Atlanta finished 94-68, won the East and is the third seed. Philadelphia finished 88-74 and arrives as the sixth.
Across the full season the two clubs were not close. They finished six games apart in the division. Atlanta outscored its opponents by 116 runs over 162 games; Philadelphia by 15. Atlanta took the season series 9-4. Almost none of that carries into a best-of-three, which is the honest case for playing one.
Ellis has the series structure, and what a three-series October record does and does not prove. Dex has Philadelphia's pitching and the argument he has already published about it.
Falcons
The rest of the NFC South lost in full on Sunday: Carolina at Cleveland 21-18, Tampa Bay at home to Minnesota 23-16, New Orleans at home to Las Vegas 35-27. Atlanta won on Thursday, 35-14 at Green Bay. Atlanta is still not first in it. Carolina, Atlanta and New Orleans are all 1-2, Tampa Bay is 0-3, and the standings have Carolina at the top of the division and fourth in the conference, with Atlanta eleventh. Three clubs in this division have lost more than they have won and the fourth has not won at all. Nobody in it is running away with anything, which is the most useful thing the first three weeks have established. Miles has the read on what actually happened in Green Bay.
The live Falcons item this week is not a game. Baltimore at Atlanta on Sunday, October 11 is already scheduled in the Sunday night window, and the league has until tomorrow to decide whether to move it out of that window and into the afternoon. Week 5 is the first week of the season the rule is available at all, and it may be used up to twice between Weeks 5 and 10. The rule moves games one direction: a Sunday afternoon game gets promoted into the night, and the game already sitting there gets pushed back to the afternoon. So the question is not whether Atlanta is handed a national window. It is whether Atlanta keeps the window it already has. Atlanta itself does not play again until Monday, October 5 at New Orleans, 8:15 p.m.
Hawks
Media day for the remaining 28 clubs is this morning, after this reaches you. Atlanta is in that group of 28; the league runs the two clubs with preseason commitments outside North America on a separate calendar. Camps open tomorrow, and the first preseason games are Saturday, October 3.
Whatever gets said this morning, this part is already settled. Henri Veesaar, the rookie center taken 52nd overall, tore the ACL in his right knee, has surgery scheduled for October and is expected to miss the season; the club announced it on September 21. The group that opens camp tomorrow will not include him. A second-round rookie missing a year is not a crisis, and it is not nothing either. It is the first fixed cost of a season that has not started. Simone has media day and the conference Atlanta is being measured against.
Atlanta United
They went backwards on Sunday without kicking a ball. Columbus Crew beat Inter Miami 2-1 at home and moved from 26 points to 29, stepping over Atlanta's unchanged 27 and dropping Atlanta to 14th of 15 in the Eastern Conference. Columbus had a match in hand and spent it. Only CF Montreal, on 24, sits below them.
Atlanta's own row did not move at all: 27 points from 27 matches, 7-14-6, minus-13 on goal difference. That is the part worth sitting with. The numbers are identical to yesterday's and the position attached to them is not, and nothing between now and the next kickoff is Atlanta's to influence. The table will keep moving anyway.
Then the pause. Saturday's 2-2 draw with New York City FC was the last match on the schedule until FC Cincinnati visit on Saturday, October 10. Tito had the draw.
One more thing.
Atlanta played 162 games to earn a series that can be over in two. That trade is the entire design of the format, and you can see it in the broadcast schedule. Games 1 and 2 have a first pitch. Thursday does not, because the clock on it depends on the series lasting that long, and on which other series are still alive when it does.
The Tilt
Atlanta United dropping a place without playing is the truest sentence about their season.

Almost everything on Atlanta's board this morning is an estimate - a hip, an ankle, a hamstring, a table position. The exception is a Gold Glove won by a man who filed for free agency three days before it was announced.

There is no NBA game anywhere tonight. Then Atlanta's week arrives all at once — Washington twice inside three days, two fixtures on Saturday, Madrid on Sunday.
