Atlanta lost by six at home last night and the East lead did not move. Something else did.

Braves

Rays 7, Braves 1 at Truist Park, the opener of three.

The division is where it was: Atlanta 85-60 in 145 games, Philadelphia 81-64 in the same 145, the lead four. The league lists Atlanta's magic number at 13.

The number that moved is the other one. Atlanta woke up Tuesday two games behind Los Angeles for the second bye in the National League. They wake up today three behind, on equal games played, which makes it a clean three rather than an artifact of the calendar. Milwaukee are 4.5 up on Atlanta in the league on 146 games -- that half is games played, not a decimal. Nobody in the National League has clinched anything.

Seventeen games left to sort it, and both Braves desks worked the same seventeen from opposite ends this morning. Ellis found the correction: the published postseason calendar puts two off days inside the Division Series, so the round wants four starters rather than three, and Atlanta are carrying six arms toward four jobs -- with Bryce Elder, whose right knee was operated on Tuesday, not among the six. Dex worked the near end, took apart the cold-arm story attached to tonight's starter, and put the alarm somewhere better: Atlanta have scored one run in two games.

Reynaldo Lopez is listed opposite Griffin Jax at 7:15 tonight, Truist Park again. Both listed, neither announced.

Falcons

Nobody in this league has played a game yet. Atlanta are 0-0 like everybody else, and they open Sunday at 1:00 PM at Acrisure Stadium -- Pittsburgh, road, the first of 17.

What opens today is the paperwork. The regular-season injury report cycle begins on the Wednesday of game week, which means this afternoon Atlanta file their first practice-participation report of the year. Everything this city knows about Michael Penix Jr.'s knee has come from a podium. This is the first time the club has to write it down.

It publishes after this edition, so it is the thing to check tonight rather than the thing you already know. And what a practice report can actually measure is narrower than the conclusions that will be drawn from it inside an hour -- Miles built that case and it holds.

Tua Tagovailoa starts Sunday. Cooper Rush is behind him. Penix will be inactive.

Hawks

Atlanta's roster page reads 21 names this morning, one more than it did Monday. The addition is Devon Higgs, a guard on a training camp deal signed Tuesday, and he arrives without a jersey number.

Read the route rather than the transaction. Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee. Georgia Southwestern State in Americus, undrafted in 2023. Stops with the Motor City Cruise and the Greensboro Swarm. Then the College Park Skyhawks -- Atlanta's own affiliate -- and 11.5 points a game across six Summer League appearances for the Hawks in July.

A training camp deal promises nothing, and nobody has claimed otherwise. What Atlanta did on Tuesday was sign a player who has spent three years getting from one end of Georgia to the other.

The club also formalized front-office titles the same day, Peter Dinwiddie to executive vice president of basketball operations, in a department Onsi Saleh runs. Training camps open September 29. The preseason opens at home on October 5 against Memphis.

Atlanta United

Orlando City at Mercedes-Benz Stadium tonight, 7:30, home, on Apple TV.

The table has been telling one story for months -- 14th of 15 in the East, 22 points from 23 matches, six wins against 13 defeats -- and the last month has not been that story at all. Taken by date rather than by whatever a form field claims: a win over the Red Bulls on August 15, a win at Minnesota on the 20th, a win over Sporting Kansas City on the 23rd, a home defeat to Charlotte on the 29th, a draw at Inter Miami on Saturday. Ten points from fifteen.

That is a playoff club's month, and it has moved Atlanta precisely nowhere, because the thing they are chasing moves too. Orlando are eighth on 28. Philadelphia are ninth on 27 and host Cincinnati tonight. The five points between Atlanta and the line are live in two buildings at once this evening.

Two things to hold onto. Eleven matches is 33 points, so five is ground rather than a wall. And we have been working on the assumption that nine clubs per conference reach the field -- that is the format everyone is using, and we have not held the 2026 rulebook up against it. Tito's read on the visitors is the thing to have in your head before kickoff.

One more thing.

Michael Penix Jr. described his knee on Monday. "I'm really close. Really close."

He said it twice, which is the part worth sitting with. He partially tore the ACL in his left knee last November. He took no preseason snaps. He got full-team repetitions only in the final week of the preseason. And he is close enough to say it twice.

Close is not a status. The report Atlanta file this afternoon has three boxes -- full, limited, did not participate -- and none of them is close. Sunday's roster has two, active and inactive, and neither of them is close either. Every system this league uses to describe a player resolves to a binary before kickoff, and Penix is spending this week in the one space those systems have no word for.

He will not dress at Acrisure Stadium. By his own account he will be, while it happens, closer than he has been all year.
