Out Twice, Tied Three Times

Tilt spent this week pointing at two pieces of paper that did not exist yet: the Falcons' Friday designation report and the Braves' Friday night against the club chasing them. On Friday both got written. One said Out twice and put an undrafted rookie's name where the eighth pick's would go. The other took eleven innings.

Braves 6, Phillies 5, in eleven. Atlanta trailed with three outs left in the ninth, the tenth and the eleventh and tied it every time: on a ball misplayed in center, on a sacrifice fly that scored a placed runner, and on a two-out single by Ha-Seong Kim, who was hitting .110 on Wednesday. Then Drake Baldwin doubled Kim home from first. Chris Sale gave seven innings and three runs, all on one two-out swing in the second. Ellis has the eleventh. Atlanta are 87-61, Philadelphia 82-66; the lead is 5.0 with 14 to play, and the magic number is 9 as MLB reads it. Ellis wrote Thursday that the race worth watching was the one walking into Truist Park; it walked in and left a game further back.

Flowery Branch. The club posted its Game Status Report at 1:39 PM and both quarterback lines read Out: Tua Tagovailoa, oblique, after a limited Thursday and no practice Friday; Michael Penix Jr., knee, after a third full practice. Cooper Rush starts Sunday at Pittsburgh. The backup is Jack Strand, 22, undrafted out of Minnesota State Moorhead. Asked whether Penix was an option, Kevin Stefanski said, per ESPN: "No. Mike will be ready when he's ready." Asked on the club's own site whether Tagovailoa was day-to-day or week-to-week, he said "yes." Week-to-week is the characterization of ESPN's Marc Raimondi; the club has put no duration on it. Miles reads the second name at No. 2 as a decision, not a disclosure. Dex's Penix number went from 69 back to 67.

Two postings. Lane Thomas went on the 10-day injured list Friday, retroactive to September 8, with a strained left intercostal, per the league's transactions feed; the 15-day, right-side line Tilt carried Thursday night and this morning was the AP's, and both pieces now say so. The corresponding move was DaShawn Keirsey Jr., recalled from Gwinnett Friday, who pinch-ran in the ninth and scored the tying run in his first game as a Brave.

Atlanta United are at Audi Field on Saturday, 7:30, D.C. United.

One more thing. The football club's answer was a decision and the baseball club's was a result, and neither is done costing anything. The decision is billed Sunday at 1:00 in Pittsburgh, to a quarterback with 16 career starts, none of them for Atlanta. The result gets its next line Saturday at 7:15 at Truist Park, game two of three, with the same club in the other dugout.
