Penix Just Told You the Answer

Six outlets debated the Falcons QB competition this week. Michael Penix Jr. ended the debate himself with one sentence.

Penix said it. Out loud. On the record.

"I can't worry about a starting job until I'm worried about getting back on the field."

That's your QB competition. One guy is rehabbing his third ACL. The other went 6-of-8 with red-zone touchdowns to Dotson and London at Saturday Night Lights.

I was at 85% on July 24. I'm raising it to 90.

Penix said four more weeks to clearance on July 29. That puts him at late August — after the entire preseason. The opener against Denver is Friday. He's not playing. He might not be cleared before Week 1.

Six outlets ran QB battle pieces this week. Heavy. The Athletic. Blogging Dirty. Sports Talk ATL. Sportsnaut. Yardbarker. Sports Talk ATL says nobody believes in the Falcons because of the QB situation. They've got it backwards. The QB situation is the one thing that's settled.

Tua says "it's definitely a competition." Penix says he can't worry about the starting job. Read those two quotes again and tell me which one sounds like a starter.

The real question isn't who starts. It's whether 2025 Tua — twenty touchdowns, fifteen interceptions, benched for Quinn Ewers, $99 million in dead cap to make him disappear — follows him here. Stefanski built a quick-release system for the 2023 version. 4,624 yards. NFL passing leader. Camp says the good version showed up. That's the $1.3 million bet.

I called this theater in July. I was wrong about one thing. Theater requires two actors.

The Tilt

The Falcons don't have a QB competition — theater requires two actors.
