The Only October Atlanta United Has

Third minute in Kissimmee. Cameron Dunbar whips a first-time cross in from the left, Arif Kovac gets across his man and puts it away from inches, and the afternoon that follows at Osceola Heritage Park ends with Atlanta United 2 beating Orlando City B 4-2. A draw would have been enough. They won it anyway.

Issah Haruna answered from long range in the 18th. Then the Orlando goalkeeper punched a Dunbar corner into one of his own defenders, and in the 40th Dunbar cut one back from the goal line for Ignacio Suarez-Couri, 17 years old — the 13th assist of Dunbar's season. Justin Hylton pulled Orlando back to within one two minutes into stoppage time. Dominik Chong Qui ran through alone in the 63rd and settled it. Andrew Jardines, 19, started the move for two of the four.

By Sunday evening the league had handed Kovac the Golden Boot for a League-best 20 goals — a tally that, per its own release, ties the record for second-most in a single season in MLS NEXT Pro history, level with Jason Shokalook's 2025 and one short of the 21 Jacen Russell-Rowe scored for Columbus Crew 2 in 2022 — and given Dunbar the Playmaker of the Year award, only the second one ever handed out, for 13 assists. Kovac is 20. In May he scored five in a single match, a league record.

Nine seasons

Atlanta United 2 joined USL as an expansion team in 2018 and moved to MLS NEXT Pro before the 2023 season, and in none of those years had they played a playoff match. Last October, on the final day, they drew 1-1 at Chattanooga FC and lost the shootout 5-4, and that was the season. José Silva was named interim head coach on July 23, 2025, after Steve Cooke left for Lexington SC; the club promoted him to head coach on Dec. 15. This year his side scored 62 goals, second-most in the league, and by the club's own count set team records for wins, points, goals and assists. The league's East table prints them as Atlanta United 2 (48 points, 14-9-5). Third seed.

I wrote in June about the club's 13-year-olds winning a national final on penalties, and about the U-16s losing one the same way. What that piece could not tell you was what was happening on the level directly above them. Now it can.

The one place the two seasons touched

The pathway reached the first team three times this year, and all three were cameos from the bench. Suarez-Couri came on in the 89th minute at Charlotte in July. Enzo Dovlo came on in the 70th against the same club at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in August. The one in between is the one Tilt was there for.

On Aug. 1 the senior side signed Kovac to a short-term agreement for the match at Philadelphia — his second of the season — and brought him on in the 84th minute for Miguel Almirón. The Union scored twice in stoppage time. Two agreements, three match-day squads, one appearance at Subaru Park: that is the whole first-team career of a forward who has just won the Golden Boot in a 30-team league. The roster rules allowed him four squads and two matches.

The outer ring gets one line. The senior side sits 14th of 15 in the Eastern Conference on 26 points from 26 matches, won at Portland on Saturday night, and plays Saturday, at home, against New York City. Three weeks ago on this desk I called the second-team players the club had borrowed to fill out a match-day squad paperwork with boots on. The paperwork was having a season.

Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET the league streams the Eastern Conference selection show. "For the first two rounds of the Playoffs, the Conference Quarterfinals and Semifinals, higher seeded teams will select and host their opponents from lower seeds," the release says; as the No. 3 seed, Atlanta pick from the fifth through eighth or ninth seeds. Nobody has picked anybody yet. That happens tomorrow afternoon, after this publishes.

Then Sunday, Oct. 18, at home, against a club they will have chosen themselves. "For the first time in their nine seasons of existence, Atlanta United 2 is headed to the playoffs," Sydney Hunte wrote in Scarves and Spikes on Monday. El camino — the path up — finally arrives somewhere this October. It runs from the academy through Kissimmee and stops one level below the side this city pays to watch. On Oct. 18 an Atlanta United team plays a postseason match. It is not the senior one, and that is nobody's fault but the senior one's.
