Thirty Goals, and a Visitor With Half That Many

Thirty.

Thirty goals in twenty-six matches. No other club in the Eastern Conference has scored fewer.

Now the number that reframes it. Forty-three conceded — a total six Eastern clubs have exceeded and eight have bettered. Middling. Unremarkable. So whatever has happened to Atlanta United's 2026, it did not happen at the back.

The distribution is harsher than the total. They have failed to score at all in nine of their twenty-six matches. They have reached three goals twice all season — Philadelphia in March, CF Montréal on May 2 — and not once in the fifteen matches since. Alexey Miranchuk leads the team on six. Nobody else has more than four. Tristan Muyumba, a midfielder, is on four; Miguel Almirón, the captain, has taken fifty-two shots, more than anyone else in the squad, and has four to show for them.

I have made this argument three times this month at match level. After nineteen shots and nothing at Audi Field I wrote that the point was not a result, it was a description. On Sunday, after Portland, I wrote that the defence was the new thing. The season aggregate agrees with both halves, then decides which one is the story.

Saturday, the mirror walks in.

Nicolás Fernández has fifteen goals for New York City FC. Fifteen. Half of Atlanta's entire season inside one man, and he is listed as a midfielder. He comes to Mercedes-Benz Stadium behind a road record of thirteen conceded in twelve away matches, for a club that takes more points per match away from home than in it.

Widen out. Anywhere in the world, a side with a mid-table defence and the lowest goal tally in its half of the table has one problem and one repair, and the repair is the most expensive item in football. Nobody buys a centre-forward in late September. What a side can do in late September is choose which half of the pitch it means to win — and to my eye Atlanta have spent this month making their peace with the defensive half.

La promesa. The promise this club made this city was goals. Josef Martinez scored thirty-one of them in 2018 and took the Golden Boot, and the building filled because Atlanta United were the team that scored — not the team that defended well, not the team that competed. Eight years on, the entire squad has thirty in twenty-six. Arif Kovac won the MLS NEXT Pro Golden Boot with twenty for the second team and wears number thirty-nine on the senior roster. The goals exist somewhere in this organisation. They stop one level short.

An accounting, while we are here. The thesis I carried out of August — that this team beats what is beneath it and folds against quality — has stopped describing them. The wins over Red Bull New York, Minnesota United and Portland Timbers all came against clubs above Atlanta on points. True in August. Not true now, and I will not keep saying it.

Two clubs arrive in identical condition. One win, two draws, two defeats in the last five for Atlanta; the same three figures for New York; five points from fifteen apiece, walked match by match rather than lifted off a feed's form column. Six points separate them on the table and nothing separates them over a month of football.

And the building itself. Thirteen points from twelve home matches, thirteen from fourteen on the road. Four home wins in twelve. Whatever Mercedes-Benz Stadium has meant to this franchise, in 2026 it has not been an advantage — and that, not any table position, is the sentence that should worry the 17s.

Nothing else has come out of the club this week: four consecutive scans by this outlet surfaced no new Atlanta United item, the most recent thing touching them a league-wide power-rankings column from Monday. Tata Martino's side goes into this one in near silence.

Saturday, 7:30 PM EDT, on Apple TV. First meeting of the season and not the last — the fixture reverses at Yankee Stadium on October 28, so the series opens and closes inside the run-in. After Saturday there is no football here until October 10.

They are not eliminated. That is all the arithmetic gets from me.

So watch the thing that has decided this season rather than the thing that will decide this match. Atlanta do not have to keep Fernández quiet for Saturday to mean something. They have to score twice.

It sounds like nothing. It has been the whole year.
