What Penix Inherits

The last pass Michael Penix Jr. threw in a game was incomplete, short left, at 5:22 of the third quarter on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2025, with Atlanta leading Carolina 21-16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He was hurt on the play, by ESPN's play-by-play; Kirk Cousins finished, Carolina won 30-27 in overtime, and Penix's line stopped at 13 of 16 for 175. Monday at 4:29 p.m. ET the club named him the starter for Thursday night at Lambeau Field; ESPN's Marc Raimondi had it at 4:37. Sunday I wrote that the Rush start "said nothing about Michael Penix Jr." Monday the club said something. A named starter is a decision about Thursday's dropback snaps. It is not a result; the columns this offense has built do not become his by announcement.

What he inherits

The two-game column belongs to the offense, not to Cooper Rush alone. The red-zone zero and the column rebuilt from both boxes are in Sunday's piece; Green Bay's third-down and red-zone rows are in Monday's. Rush's two starts sum, by ESPN's boxes, to 22 of 39 for 229 yards, one touchdown, four interceptions and a lost fumble, with five sacks on 44 dropbacks, the 39 attempts plus the five, an 11.4% rate. Jack Strand's relief was 8 of 15 for 59 and an interception. The run half, 120 yards in Pittsburgh and 157 against Carolina, is the same offense Thursday.

What he was

Twelve starts is a small sample; I treat it as one. Three starts in 2024, 1-2. In 2025, nine starts, not ten: he missed Week 8 against Miami with a bone bruise in his left knee, per the club's November statement. The nine read 166 of 276, 60.1%, for 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns, three interceptions and 13 sacks, 3-6 as a starter. Summed with 2024's 61 of 105 for 775, the career line is 227 of 381, 59.6%, for 2,757 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions, which is ESPN's sentence and reconciles row by row; 4-8 as a starter.

Two columns bear on Thursday. The 13 sacks came on 289 dropbacks, 276 attempts plus the 13, a 4.5% rate beside Rush's 11.4%; different seasons and different lines, so a contrast, not a projection. By ESPN's longest-completion column, six of nine 2025 games had a completion of 38 yards or more, the 69 against Washington the longest; Rush's two-game long is 24, Strand's 13.

The knee, from the schedule

Seven games followed, Weeks 12 through 18, and he played in none. The club's Nov. 19 statement, a Wednesday, said he "will undergo season-ending surgery for a partially torn ACL," the left knee. I am not printing a surgery date; that statement is future-tense, and no primary source carries the day. Thursday is 312 days after Nov. 16, ten months and eight days. Raimondi's timeline is ESPN's: "Penix had reconstructive surgery a few weeks later and then another procedure to further stabilize the joint." And: "The typical timetable for a return from ACL surgery is between nine and 12 months." Where Penix sits inside that sentence is not mine to say. The club's record: cleared for 11-on-11 work on Aug. 22, a Saturday, before the third preseason week; no preseason snaps; and on Monday's estimated report, Full Participation, knee.

Tommy Rees's criteria are on the club's page, dated by it to last week: "But in terms of the lower-body movement and his ability to play quick and do those things, I think Mike's progressed really nicely." And: "He's moved in the pocket. He's gotten outside of the pocket. I'll let the medical side handle all those things, but I'm very pleased with where Mike's been." A play-caller's criteria are movement criteria, the ones the sack column measures, and the last clause is a coordinator declining to carry a medical opinion, which is the right refusal.

The short week, as the club prints it

At 1:51 p.m. Monday, per the AJC's Daniel Flick, Kevin Stefanski had "a decent idea of where we’re going, but I’ve not yet talked to the players"; at 4:29 the club posted; at 5:41 the Week 3 chart listed Penix first, with Tua Tagovailoa as his backup. On the AP's page, Stefanski's sentence on the process is that he is "very confident in our discussions with Mike, with medical, throughout this entire process," which describes the conversation, not the knee. The Falcons did not practice Monday; they held a walk-through, so the report is an estimate: Penix full; Jawaan Taylor (rib), Brian Robinson Jr. (ankle) and Tagovailoa (oblique) limited; A.J. Terrell Jr. (groin) and Samson Ebukam (hamstring) did not participate. Atlanta travels Wednesday. Dex's receipt grades on the first snap Thursday, not on a Monday post.

Thursday's box adds a fourth row to the third-down column and either a first entry at the 20 or another zero, both scored to a quarterback 312 days from his last snap. The calendar has finished the only work a calendar can do. From here the questions belong to the schedule, and the schedule does not estimate.
