Empty Seats, Empty Edge, Empty Answers

Team B showed up to preseason, Sean Payton counted the empty seats from the halftime booth, and both first-round edge rushers vanished before Week 1.

Team B showed up to preseason.

Yesterday I said ESPN's 5.7-win projection averaged a nine-win team and a four-win team. Friday night answered which one exists right now.

The compound collapse: Jalon Walker tore his ACL on Aug 5. James Pearce got suspended for eight games on Aug 14. That is both 2025 first-round edge rushers gone before Week 1. Zero premium pass rushers through at least Week 8. Tua fumbled his second snap. Cooper Rush posted a 6.8 passer rating and threw a 97-yard pick-six. Jack Strand — the D-II UDFA I wrote about in July — scored the only Falcons touchdown.

The punchline is still running the offense.

Then Sean Payton walked into Mercedes-Benz Stadium and said this: "A lot of people dressed up as empty seats today."

The man is 11-4 in that building. He earned the joke. That is what hurts.

But the seats are not the problem. MBS averaged 70,599 for regular-season games last year. Atlanta fills that building. What Atlanta cannot fill is the edge. Or the QB room. Or the five-week silence from a front office watching both first-round picks disappear.

On Aug 10 I said Cunningham had the trade targets, the cap space, and four days to act. He did not act. Now it is not one edge rusher missing. It is both. The crisis doubled and the response stayed at zero.

Defector dropped its "Why Your Team Sucks" column the same week. Even the national misery industrial complex has perfect timing against this franchise.

The Falcons do not get to answer Payton until Sept 20. Five weeks of silence.

Tell me that is not the most Falcons thing you have ever heard.

The Tilt

The front office watched both edge rushers disappear and responded with nothing.
