The Braves avoided the sweep with a 437-foot exclamation point, and the pitcher who was once supposed to be their future stood sixty feet away in the wrong uniform.
One game tonight. One answer, one ghost, and one very large home run.
Braves 5, Diamondbacks 3
Bryce Elder threw six innings of one-run ball on 75 pitches — six days after surrendering seven earned runs to the Mets. Matt Olson broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh with a three-run homer that traveled 437 feet. The Braves avoided the three-game sweep and improved to 74-50.
Ellis wrote this morning about the rotation dependency behind Chris Sale. Tonight, Elder provided a counter-data-point. One start does not close a gap, but it is the kind of start that keeps the question open rather than answered.
The subplot: Michael Soroka pitched for Arizona at Truist Park. The former Brave — All-Star at 21, Achilles-derailed at 23, now rebuilding on a $7.5 million deal with the Diamondbacks — went 5.2 innings of competitive baseball against his old team. He left with a no-decision and a 2.93 ERA. Ellis has the full read on what Soroka's presence meant for the rotation question.
Raisel Iglesias recorded save number 25. He also allowed a hit, a walk, and a run while striking out nobody. The pattern continues.
Elsewhere. The Falcons are off until preseason Week 2 at Indianapolis on Saturday. The Hawks remain in the NBA offseason. Atlanta United's comeback win over the Red Bulls last night is still settling — Tito's analysis on what that homecoming meant is already on the site.
One more thing. The Braves head to Minnesota on Monday. Three games against the Twins. The rotation question follows them there. Elder answered it for one night. Thirty-eight games remain for everyone else to do the same.
The Tilt
Elder's one-night answer matters less than the fact that the question followed the Braves all the way through a home series they lost.
