Falcons

James Pearce Jr. drew an eight-game suspension yesterday for violating the personal conduct policy. Not performance-enhancing substances — personal conduct, the maximum for a first offense. He did not appeal. Jalon Walker tore his ACL on August 5 and is done for the season. Both 2025 first-round picks. Both edge rushers. Combined for 16 of the franchise-record 57 sacks last season.

Twenty-eight percent of the pass rush, gone before the first snap of the regular season.

The preseason opener against Denver filled in the margins: 27-7, Tua fumbled on his second snap, Cooper Rush posted a 6.8 passer rating and threw a 97-yard pick-six, and the only Falcons touchdown came from Jack Strand — the Division II undrafted free agent. Then Sean Payton walked into his halftime interview and offered this: "A lot of people dressed up as empty seats today." The man is 11-4 inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He earned the line.

The seats are not the issue. MBS averaged 70,599 for regular-season games last year. What this franchise cannot fill is the edge — and Pearce is not eligible to return until Week 9 in Madrid, which means the Falcons face Pittsburgh, Green Bay on Thursday night, New Orleans on Monday night, and Lamar Jackson on Sunday Night Football without either first-round rusher. Braves

Three hits. Zero extra-base hits. Zero walks. Eleven strikeouts. The Braves lost Game 1 to Arizona 2-0, and Zac Pfaadt made the best lineup in the National League East look uncertain from first pitch to last. Ronald Acuna Jr. went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts — the sort of line that vanishes inside a 73-49 record but sits in a manager's head the next afternoon.

This was the first shutout since June 27. At 8.5 games up in the division, it carries no mathematical consequence and considerable diagnostic value. The question for tonight: can this lineup generate against pitching that commands the zone? Eduardo Rodriguez brings a 2.70 ERA into Truist Park — the second consecutive quality arm the Braves will face. Grant Holmes (3.47) answers for Atlanta. Hawks

The NBA released the 2026-27 schedule. Circle November 6: Wizards at Hawks. Trae Young returns to State Farm Arena for the first time since the February trade that sent him to Washington and sent the Hawks on a 19-4 run to close the season. The farewell has not happened yet. When it does, it will be the loudest thing that building has heard since the Eastern Conference Finals.

Jonathan Kuminga remains unsigned, and the Hawks remain unmoved by sign-and-trade packages from the Lakers and Cavaliers. The front office has been described as "pretty choosy." Lu Dort is wearing number zero — Kuminga's old number. The jersey tells you more than the press releases. Atlanta United

Breel Embolo. Twenty-nine, Swiss international, arriving from Rennes for $18 million — the third-most expensive incoming transfer in MLS history. He fills the Designated Player slot vacated when Emmanuel Latte Lath was loaned to Union Berlin two weeks ago. Same slot. Same price range. Different bet.

The resume supports the investment: 91 Swiss caps, two World Cup goals, eight Ligue 1 goals last season across 31 appearances — his healthiest campaign since 2019-20. The medical file complicates it: 15 career injuries, 41 percent of possible matches missed, an ACL tear in 2023 that cost 232 days. He will play on the MBS artificial surface that fans have begged the club to replace.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium reopens tonight after 98 days. Red Bulls at 7:30 PM. Embolo will not be in the squad. But at 3-12-3, last in the Eastern Conference, 11 points from a playoff spot with 16 matches remaining, his name will be the only thing anybody in that building wants to discuss.
