Braves

The Dodgers are here. Los Angeles arrives at Truist Park tonight on a six-game winning streak, carrying the best record in the NL West at 80-51. The Braves are 6-11 in their last 17, and the NL East cushion that sat at 9.5 games a month ago is down to three.

Dex dropped his October window to 62% — the lowest it's been since he started tracking it. That's the gut read. Ellis has the mathematical one, and it's worth your time: the 83-run gap in run differential between Atlanta (+110) and Philadelphia (+27) means the Phillies are structurally an 84-win team that spent three weeks playing like a 94-win one. Streaks end. Structures hold.

Philadelphia's nine-game winning streak ended with a 9-2 loss in Seattle on Sunday. One breath of room. The Braves need to use it.

Bryce Elder starts tonight. His season reads like two different pitchers — a 1.97 ERA through eleven starts, a 3.92 since — but the relevant data point is May 10 in Los Angeles: 5.2 shutout innings, one hit, eight strikeouts against this lineup. The Dodgers add Tyler Glasnow off the 60-day injured list tomorrow, bringing a 2.72 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 39.2 innings back into a rotation that was winning without him. Tonight is the series' softest matchup. Elder needs to set the tone before the conversation gets harder.

Matt Olson's 36 home runs remain the load-bearing pillar, but Michael Harris II has gone 13-for-39 over his last ten games — a .333 clip that suggests at least one bat remembered how to hit in August.

Falcons

Michael Penix Jr. was cleared for 11-on-11 work Saturday evening, nine months after a partially torn ACL ended his season in Week 11. And Miles makes the case that the clearance made the quarterback decision harder, not easier — because the defense Penix is returning to no longer resembles the one that supported his development last fall.

The calendar is unforgiving. Preseason finale at Miami on Friday — the last evaluation window. The 53-man roster deadline is Sunday at 6 PM, the same day Pearce's eight-game suspension officially begins. By Monday morning, Stefanski will have declared a starter for a first-half schedule that features Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Baltimore, and San Francisco with a pass rush built around replacement-level edge talent.

Penix has zero full-team reps since November 16. Tua has had them for a month and looked worse for the repetition. One quarterback needs time he doesn't have. The other had the time and wasted it.

Atlanta United

Three consecutive victories. First three-match MLS win streak for this club since 2021. Tito calls it el despertar — an awakening — and he's right to calibrate the optimism: three 2-1 wins over three bottom-half opponents. Red Bulls, Minnesota, Kansas City. The xG against SKC read 1.89 to 0.68, which says domination. The schedule says not so fast.

What's new is the architecture around the streak. Breel Embolo — $18 million from Rennes, filling the DP slot Latte Lath vacated — signed the same weekend Miguel Almiron became the club's all-time leading assister with 43 career assists. A front office that read the room and reinforced a squad that had already started believing. Three points behind ninth-place Orlando, thirteen matches remaining. The playoff math is real for the first time since spring.

Charlotte at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday is the first opponent in this run that can actually punch back. Charlotte leads the all-time series 5-4, swept the 2025 season series, and has figured out how to win at the Benz. That result will tell you whether this is a revival or a three-week fever.

Hawks

The quietest story in Atlanta right now might be the most consequential. Simone asks the question worth sitting with: who tells Onsi Saleh when he's wrong?

Kyle Korver gone. Bryson Graham hired away by Chicago to run their entire basketball operation. GM chair empty since Saleh was promoted out of it in May. A team that produced back-to-back Most Improved Players — Daniels in 2024-25, Alexander-Walker this past season at 20.8 points per game — built that success through institutional knowledge and internal friction. The people who provided both have left the building.

Kuminga remains unsigned after Atlanta declined his $24.3 million option, with cap space evaporating league-wide and leverage eroding by the day. Okongwu's extension eligibility arrives October 1 after a career-best season. These are franchise-shaping decisions, and the room making them has never been smaller.

The roster earned 46 wins and a Southeast Division title. Whether concentrated authority can push the ceiling past a first-round exit — that's a spring question. But the decisions shaping it are happening now, in August, with nobody arguing.

One more thing. Miguel Almiron became Atlanta United's all-time leading assister on Saturday. Forty-three career assists, passing Brooks Lennon. There was no PA announcement. The most generous player in franchise history kept passing and let the number click over while everyone watched the scoreline. August has a way of hiding the things that matter most.
