Six Points Is Really Seven

Atlanta United have not played since September 26 and do not play again until Saturday, which means the most consequential month of their season has opened with nothing in it at all. Seven matches left, 21 points available, and a six-point gap the tiebreakers quietly make seven.

Thirteen days between matches, and this is the middle of them.

Atlanta United last played on September 26, a 2-2 draw with New York City FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. They do not play again until FC Cincinnati visit on Saturday night. Nothing to argue about in between except what is still possible.

Seven left.

The numbers, and then I stop. Atlanta have 27 points from 27 matches: seven wins, 14 losses, six draws. Seven matches remain and 21 points with them. They are 14th of 15 in the Eastern Conference. Nine qualify per conference: the top seven, then eighth hosts ninth in a single Wild Card match on November 18. Ninth is the last place that counts, and ninth is New York City FC on 33. The gap is six points. Decision Day is Saturday, November 7.

Six is not the number

MLS separates clubs level on points by total wins first. Atlanta have seven wins. New York City FC have eight. FC Cincinnati, also on 33, have eight. Red Bull New York, eighth on the same 33, have nine.

So finishing level with the line does not clear it. Atlanta have to finish above it, and the extra point that requires appears in no table anybody prints. Six behind. Seven in practice.

And it is not one club. Five have to finish below them: New York City FC and FC Cincinnati on 33, D.C. United on 30, Columbus Crew and Toronto FC on 29. Cincinnati, D.C. United and Chicago Fire have each played a match fewer, so three of the clubs above Atlanta have more points available than Atlanta do.

What 14 losses actually look like

Seven of the 14 defeats were by a single goal, and 12 of the 27 matches were decided by one. Only one of the 14 was by more than two goals. This is a side that has lost the same close match seven times, from Real Salt Lake in March to Orlando City on September 9.

The draws have the same shape: six all season, three of them inside the last five matches. Lucas Hoyos has played all 27 matches, with 68 saves, 45 conceded and three clean sheets behind him.

The failure is not collapse. It is a margin - one goal short, or one goal conceded late enough to cost the points - held for eight months, and that is harder to fix than a thrashing. Gerardo Martino is in his first season back and has spent most of it one goal from a different table.

Four at home is not a gift

Four of the seven remaining are at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which reads like the schedule being kind. It is not. Atlanta have taken 14 points from 13 home matches and 13 from 14 on the road: 4-7-2 at home, 3-7-4 away. In 2026 that building has been worth almost nothing.

Almost anywhere else in the football world, a club 14th of 15 in October would be counting down toward a punishment. MLS has no relegation. Nothing waits underneath this table. The only thing at the end of this run-in is the thing Atlanta have to win their way into.

The one structurally hopeful fact

Three of the five clubs Atlanta must pass are on their own fixture list, and so is Red Bull New York, eighth on the same 33. Cincinnati at home Saturday. New York City FC at Yankee Stadium on October 28. Toronto FC at home on November 1. Red Bull New York away on Decision Day. A 14th-placed club usually needs other people's results. These ones keep arriving on Atlanta's calendar instead.

October 28 is the date I marked. After the September 26 draw I said I would come back to that Yankee Stadium return with nobody's absence left to explain anything. The fifth of the seven, and the likeliest place this becomes a run-in or stops being one.

Two of the last seven were wins: Sporting Kansas City on August 23, and the 1-0 at Portland I declined to call a turning point. One in the last six. That is the form the 21 points sit on.

One correction I owe. On September 22 I headlined a piece The Only October Atlanta United Has about the second team reaching the MLS NEXT Pro playoffs. I meant the only postseason October. The senior side has five matches this month, two against clubs it has to pass.

Thirteen days of nothing end at 7:30 on Saturday. Then seven matches, four of them against clubs in the same race, and a gap the tiebreakers have quietly made a point wider than the table admits. Vamos is not the word for this yet. Saturday is where it would have to start.

The Tilt

Six points off the playoff line is really seven, because Atlanta United lose the wins tiebreaker.
